In its announcement dated 7 August 2025, the Ministry of Finance states that the Marshall Islands are undergoing an assessment of Common Reporting Standard implementation. Collecting additional customer information before opening a bank account is among the preliminary recommendations reported.
The issue concerns due diligence enabling automatic exchange of financial information, not creation of a tax on the account holder. The Ministry announces work with local banks without reproducing in that announcement the list of additional information or a new penalty framework.
For a bank, this announcement can identify work needed on its procedures, but cannot alone establish the contents of a new request to customers. Each requested item should be tied to its purpose and the applicable framework. For the account holder, providing information does not determine their personal tax position; the mechanism described primarily concerns the quality of data intended for exchanges between administrations.
The announcement referred to a June 2026 deadline for addressing the recommendations. That date has passed, but it establishes neither their complete implementation nor the final assessment's outcome. For an institution or customer, precise obligations must be sought in the applicable rules and instructions.
