The Belastingdienst has announced dispatch of the first final income tax assessments for 2025. Receiving one calls for reconciliation with amounts already paid or refunded under the provisional assessment, rather than reading the final amount in isolation.
The provisional assessment is based on an estimate of personal and financial circumstances. A change in income or circumstances may therefore produce a balance payable on final assessment, even where provisional payments were regularly made.
Reconciliation may cover the income taken into account, personal circumstances reported and payments on account or refunds already recorded. It helps explain the balance without assuming that it necessarily results from an administrative error. To update the next estimate, the taxpayer must distinguish a one-off event from a lasting change in circumstances; carrying forward the final assessment figures without examination could repeat a mismatch in provisional payments.
The administration recalls that the estimate can be adjusted during the year. For 2026, a discrepancy identified for 2025 therefore provides a reason to review forecast data without mechanically copying the previous result. A final assessment for a past year does not, by itself, determine taxable income or tax benefits for the following year.
